Why Most Retaining Walls Fail
A retaining wall isn’t just a stack of block — it’s holding back tons of soil, and soil gets heavier and pushes harder when it’s saturated with water. The walls that bow, lean, and blow out almost always failed for the same reasons: no proper footing, no reinforcement, no gravel backfill, and no drainage behind the wall. Water builds up behind a wall with nowhere to go, and hydrostatic pressure pushes it over. In Jackson’s clay soil, which holds water, drainage is everything.
How We Build a Wall That Lasts
- Proper footing — a solid base below grade, sized to the wall height and soil
- Reinforcement — rebar in poured walls, geogrid or pins in block systems as needed
- Gravel backfill — free-draining stone behind the wall instead of packed clay
- Drainage — weep holes and/or a perforated drain pipe to carry water out before it can push the wall
- Batter & setback — the wall leans slightly into the slope so gravity works with us
- Proper compaction — backfill placed and compacted in lifts, not dumped
Height & Engineering
Taller walls carry a lot more load and sometimes need an engineered design or a permit depending on height and location. We’ll tell you when a wall is in DIY-height territory versus when it needs engineering, and we build to what the site actually requires — never taller and thinner than is safe.
